Titre : Advanced Statistical Methods for Astrophysical Probes of Cosmology Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : March, Marisa Cristina Editeur : london:springer Année de publication : 2013 Collection : springer theses Importance : 177 p Présentation : couv. ill. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-642-35059-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Statistical Methods Astrophysical Probes of Cosmology Résumé : This thesis explores advanced Bayesian statistical methods for extracting key information for cosmological model selection, parameter inference and forecasting from astrophysical observations. Bayesian model selection provides a measure of how good models in a set are relative to each other - but what if the best model is missing and not included in the set? Bayesian Doubt is an approach which addresses this problem and seeks to deliver an absolute rather than a relative measure of how good a model is. Supernovae type Ia were the first astrophysical observations to indicate the late time acceleration of the Universe - this work presents a detailed Bayesian Hierarchical Model to infer the cosmological parameters (in particular dark energy) from observations of these supernovae type Ia. Titre : Basic concepts of string theory Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Blumenhagen Ralph ; Dieter Lust ; Stefan Theisen Editeur : london:springer Année de publication : 2013 Collection : Theoretical and mathematical physics Importance : 782 p Présentation : couv. ill. Format : 16*24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-642-29496-9 Prix : 45.00 € Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : string theory Résumé : The purpose of this book is to thoroughly prepare the reader for research in string theory at an intermediate level. As such it is not a compendium of results but intended as textbook in the sense that most of the material is organized in a pedagogical and self-contained fashion.
Beyond the basics, a number of more advanced topics are introduced, such as conformal field theory, superstrings and string dualities - the text does not cover applications to black hole physics and cosmology, nor strings theory at finite temperatures.
End-of-chapter references have been added to guide the reader wishing to pursue further studies or to start research in well-defined topics covered by this book.Note de contenu : Index Basic concepts of string theory [texte imprimé] / Blumenhagen Ralph ; Dieter Lust ; Stefan Theisen . - [S.l.] : london:springer, 2013 . - 782 p : couv. ill. ; 16*24 cm. - (Theoretical and mathematical physics) .

Titre : Differential Geometry and Mathematical Physics Titre original : Part I. Manifolds, Lie Groups and Hamiltonian Systems Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Rudolph, Gerd ; Schmidt, Matthias Editeur : london:springer Année de publication : 2013 Collection : Theoretical and mathematical physics Importance : 759p Présentation : couv.ill.en coul. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-94-007-5344-0 Prix : 93,55 € Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Geometry Mathematical Physics Résumé : Starting from an undergraduate level, this book systematically develops the basics of
• Calculus on manifolds, vector bundles, vector fields and differential forms,
• Lie groups and Lie group actions,
• Linear symplectic algebra and symplectic geometry,
• Hamiltonian systems, symmetries and reduction, integrable systems and Hamilton-Jacobi theory.
The topics listed under the first item are relevant for virtually all areas of mathematical physics. The second and third items constitute the link between abstract calculus and the theory of Hamiltonian systems. The last item provides an introduction to various aspects of this theory, including Morse families, the Maslov class and caustics.
The book guides the reader from elementary differential geometry to advanced topics in the theory of Hamiltonian systems with the aim of making current research literature accessible. The style is that of a mathematical textbook, with full proofs given in the text or as exercises. The material is illustrated by numerous detailed examples, some of which are taken up several times for demonstrating how the methods evolve and interact.
